A rediscovery story to share with the HNFT community. Collectibles on Eth Blockchain from 2017 with IPFS hashes.

PEPEZEUSLIGHT (IPFS hash QmSRXeC8Cig6pstNN5VRUhWxtxhGrBUnpkWZ8bGxP76qrF), RUINSOFPEPE (IPFS hash QmW7NB2SEyVRxnDSo8cxZ686c5wgeiJfibfda2kE8G62Zg) and BASEBALLPEPE (IPFS hash QmQkXSTDGgWhXqpEjJ2iJWUhoM9k668WK7B2aguCcacaA3).

Before you dive in further, I need to educate you on the following:

IMPORTANT

⚠️ 2 IPFS images are missing, hopefully they resurface one day 🤞
⚠️ Some contracts aren’t locked, so the owner is possible to mint more.

Now that’s out of our way, let me tell you about a long forgotten project, called “Peperium”.

In March of 2017, “Peperium” was announced. Peperium was a decentralized Meme marketplace and a trading card game that allowed users to create memes by leveraging Ethereum and IPFS. The Peperium project also had its own token, RARE, which was used for meme creation and listing fees. Sadly, the project fizzled away after Series 2, with only 31 different collectibles left behind.

Blockchain archeologist Obi sought after these lost historical relics preserved on Ethereum’s blockchain. Low and behold, ICQPEPE, stumbles across some lost keys containing many precious historical NFT collectibles. Together they found some IPFS hashes, resurfaced other images and could reconnect those to the smart contracts.

Also, it turned out the one and only Scrilla made a Fake Peperium called “TAOWARARE” back in 2017. It’s also included in the wrapper (more about that later on)

The cards/assets

There were 2 series with a total of 31 cards (series 1 has 18 cards, series 2 has 13 cards). And 1 fake one 😊

kfpepe, the first Peperium asset that was created on April 14, 2017
kfpepe (IPFS hash QmNPecJjQpggFW3o6ZFoypMrMmLDhxH7oJfjRi1WJA47kq), the first Peperium asset which was created on April 14, 2017

kfpepe (Series 1, Card 1) was the very first asset which was deployed on the blockchain, see tx https://etherscan.io/tx/0x7e0aff049085074840e5b54aefe315ac8fc12928c889d622b40d6d3abdeebd4e

CHILLPEPE (IPFS hash QmaHDZ6X2QpEctQCDqd4uG113DCfLaJTFrC1MaubLNjwbR), one of the 1/1s with on-chain IPFS hash created in 2017

CHILLPEPE (Series 2, Card 4) is one of the 1/1s, see tx https://etherscan.io/tx/0x4649d7dfbc2c3413c9a34aa09609620ce0880ba6a667c9e65f49fb49006da363

TAOWARARE, a Fake Peperium card created by the one and only Scrilla

TAOWARARE (Fake) was created on May 1st, 2017 https://etherscan.io/tx/0xa4013194ba16fab58a6c339d8c1762a4fdc7e17a690eb650cfc48862d5a4ca80
The image was created in April, 2017 (Scrilla provided screenshots to prove chat history from back then). However the image wasn’t on IPFS yet and the hash isn’t stored in the contract (cause it’s the only “plain” ERC20). We decided to put the image on IPFS (in 2023) and link it to the contract through metadata.

⚠️ TAOWARE has 8 decimals so make sure to work with this when buying/wrapping/sending. In the original contract this means 100,000,000 equals 1 whole TAOWARARE.

In the metadata it’s specified so you can work with whole amounts on marketplaces such as OpenSea, but apparently people are sending/listing fractions so be careful!

Historical note

So Peperium turned out to be one of the first projects to utilize IPFS, and just like Curio Cards it has its hash stored within every contract (except for TAOWARARE).

I want to learn more?!

The website has almost all of the important details, images, links etc, and also indicates wether a card is locked or has an on-chain IPFS image which matches the hash stored in the contract. You’re even able to interact with the original contracts yourself with the ABI posted there.

How can I get some of these historical NFTs?

We’ve deployed a wrapper and wrapped the cards ICQPEPE, Scrilla and I had. They’re available on OpenSea: https://opensea.io/collection/the-lost-peperium-pepes
Of course there are more than 10 cards (32 in total, including TAOWARARE), and they will show up when one of the holders decides to wrap them (we don’t own these).
We’ve listed some cards in tiers, making it accessible to most users. The 1/1s might be for sale too, you can make offers in WETH or USDC.

Note: Peperium isn’t our project, we’ve made it available to the rest of the world through the website and the wrapper, cause such historical relics need to be in collectors wallets!

Good to mention

PEPERIUMCLASSIC (Series 2, Card 3) has the same design as the Rare Pepe XCP asset PEPEREALM. PEPERIUMCLASSIC was a commissioned piece for ICQPEPE that was accepted into both projects simultaneously. Only one can survive: Therefore we decided to burn every single one of them we got (99,999 of 100,000 supply). UNDEADPEPE “A very CONTROVERSIAL RARE” has been rejected, revised, rejected, and revised again and again. Destroy your XCP UNDEADPEPE and resurrect on ETH blockchain. 35 UNDEADPEPE have been resurrected at the time of this post → More info about this process on the website

Closing words

If you have any questions about Peperium, or if you’re an owner which want to wrap them, hmu on Twitter, Discord or Telegram!
